Travel Insurance: What Travelers Should Know Before a Trip

Start Here

Start with what you're protecting

Vacations can involve thousands of dollars in prepaid expenses, plus flights, hotels, transfers, tickets, excursions and other arrangements that all have their own rules.

Before deciding whether travel protection makes sense for you, think about the financial and logistical pieces of your trip and the questions you would want answered if your plans changed unexpectedly.

If you couldn't take the trip

How much of what you've already paid would be refundable under the cancellation policies of your cruise line, resort, hotel, tour operator or other suppliers?

If your trip were interrupted

What additional transportation, hotel or other expenses could you potentially face if your plans changed after the trip had already begun?

If you needed care away from home

Have you checked how your existing health coverage works where you're traveling, and do you know who to contact with questions about travel medical protection?

If your belongings didn't arrive

What protections might already apply through an airline, credit card or another source, and what questions would you want answered about a separate travel protection plan?

Travel Insurance for Cruises

Cruises have a few extra moving parts

A cruise isn't just a hotel that happens to float. The ship leaves at a specific time, and your vacation may depend on several separate arrangements working together.

You may have airfare to the embarkation city, a pre-cruise hotel, ground transportation, the cruise itself and prepaid activities. Once the ship sails, catching up with it can be considerably more complicated than arriving late to a traditional resort stay.

That doesn't tell you what an insurance plan will cover. It does explain why I think cruise travelers should consider the “what if?” questions before sailing and then review the actual plan documents for answers.

Good planning still matters. When air travel is required, I recommend arriving in the cruise embarkation city at least one day before sailing. Travel protection is not a substitute for building sensible margins into your trip.

Timing

Don't wait until the suitcase is packed to think about it

I recommend reviewing travel protection options soon after making your first trip payment rather than automatically waiting until final payment or departure.

Some plan features and eligibility requirements can be time-sensitive. The exact rules depend on the plan, so this is an area where I want you reviewing the insurer's current information rather than relying on a general rule from me or from an article online.

If you've already booked your trip, that does not automatically mean it is too late to look at travel protection. Review the options currently available and let the insurer explain any timing requirements that may apply.

From Travel Insured International

Travel protection plans can contain different benefits, terms and conditions. Rather than having me interpret those provisions, my preferred travel protection partner, Travel Insured International, provides its own educational material.

My Role

What I can help with as your travel advisor

I make sure travel protection is part of the planning conversation. I can provide the resources and connect you with my preferred travel protection partner.

What I won't do is guess about insurance coverage.

I can

Make sure you know travel protection is available while you're making decisions about your trip.

I can

Direct you to Travel Insured's educational materials, plan information and purchasing resources.

I can't

Interpret policy terms, tell you whether a particular situation would be covered, evaluate your existing insurance or recommend a specific level of insurance coverage for you.

Why

Insurance policies are contracts. When a question requires insurance expertise, I want you getting the answer directly from the people qualified to give it.

Calculating Your Trip

What should you enter as your trip cost?

This can be less obvious than it sounds, especially when a vacation is booked in pieces. Your cruise or resort may be one payment, while flights, hotels or other arrangements are added separately.

I don't want to make assumptions about what an insurer considers trip cost. Travel Insured created this resource specifically to explain how trip cost works for its plans.

Before You Purchase

Questions worth getting answered

You don't need to become an insurance expert. You do want to know where to get reliable answers about the things that matter to your trip.

  • What reasons for trip cancellation or interruption does this plan cover?
  • What exclusions, limitations and conditions apply?
  • What does the plan say about medical expenses while traveling?
  • What does the plan say about pre-existing medical conditions?
  • Are any benefits or optional features subject to a purchase deadline?
  • What documentation would be required if I needed to file a claim?
  • How does the plan address travel delays, missed connections or baggage problems?
  • What should I include when entering my trip cost?
  • If I already have protection through a credit card or another source, how does that interact with this plan?

Travel Insurance FAQ

Common questions travelers ask

Do I have to buy travel insurance to book a vacation with you?

No. Travel protection is optional and is not required to book your vacation with me.

Can you tell me whether travel insurance will cover a specific situation?

No. Questions about whether a particular circumstance is covered need to be answered by the insurance provider based on the applicable plan documents.

Can you tell me which travel insurance plan I need?

I can make Travel Insured's plan information available to you, but I cannot evaluate your personal insurance needs or recommend coverage based on your individual circumstances. Travel Insured can answer plan-specific questions.

Should I wait until final payment to look at travel protection?

I would not assume that waiting has no effect. Some plan features may have time-sensitive eligibility requirements. Review the insurer's current information promptly so you can make an informed decision.

What if my credit card already includes travel protection?

Review what your card actually provides and compare it with the plan you're considering. I cannot evaluate whether your existing credit card or other insurance coverage is adequate for your trip.

Who should I contact with detailed coverage questions?

Contact Travel Insured International directly or use the contact information provided with the plan documents. They are the appropriate source for questions about benefits, terms, exclusions, conditions and eligibility.
